Job Description

At VGHS, teachers focus on supporting students to read, write, think, and work as mathematicians. They use project-based learning and culturally responsive teaching practices to foster inquiry and enable authentic student work. In addition, because appreciation and stewardship of the natural world is a focus of VGHS, environmental literacy is integrated into the math curriculum at all grade levels.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students, complies with NM state standards, and meets graduation requirements.
  • Teach 4 PBL curricular units that focus on the 4Ps: Place, phenomenon, problem, project.
  • Guide students in scientific investigations and problem-solving that approximates adult math investigations and includes original research as well as collection, analysis, and representation of real data.
  • Facilitate Math instruction that includes fieldwork and interactions with experts.
  • Leverage curriculum that explores the history and evolution of mathematical thinking and innovation.
  • Design projects, products, and authentic service-learning lead to environmental stewardship.
  • Guide students learn to reason mathematically and justify their thinking.
  • Help students articulate theories, arguments, claims and understandings through rich mathematics discourse and writing.
  • Reward curiosity, creativity, and thoughtful questioning.
  • Use multiple methods of assessment
  • Write learning targets to address concept knowledge and understanding, mathematical thinking and craftsmanship
  • Evaluate pupils' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.
  • Identifies pupil needs and makes appropriate referrals and develops strategies for individual education plans (IEPs).
  • Plans and supervises class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers, or other experiential activities, and guide students in learning from those activities

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Four year degree or higher
  • Valid Secondary Teaching License (or the ability to obtain such in proper time frames), with appropriate endorsements for the courses being taught issued by NMPED

Preferred:

  • At least one year’s previous teaching experience
  • Multilingual
  • Demonstrated knowledge for subjects/levels being taught
  • Ability to effectively communicate with parents, students, and staff
  • Endorsement in Special Education
