Job Description:

The Office of the Commandant plays a vital role in the professional and personal development of the Regiment of Cadets, ensuring that graduates emerge as capable leaders in the merchant mariner service, maritime industry, military, and global business sectors. 

The Deputy Commandant of Cadets is responsible for Leadership Development and is the Operations Officer for the Regiment Office. This senior position reports directly to the Commandant of Cadets. This individual is responsible for the execution, oversight, and continual improvement of leadership development programs and regimental operations. This includes supervising the Regimental Officer Cadre, overseeing cadet conduct, managing regimental formations and ceremonies, and directly supporting cadet leadership development both on campus and during Sea Terms. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with the Commandant of Cadets, supporting that individual in managing the overall Regiment program.
  • Assume duties as the Regimental Operations Officer responsible for oversight and administration of Regimental operations and discipline/conduct system
  • Task and mentor the Regimental Officers
  • Maintain and manage the Regiment of Cadets schedule, including responsibility for planning and executing the Plan of the Week, watch standing schedules, and discipline program timelines
  • Participates in the planning and execution of the Indoctrination Program and collaborates with Cadet Indoctrination Officer (IDO) leadership to develop and implement leadership development training programs for Mariners Under Guidance (MUGs) during both Indoctrination and the academic year
  • Provide training, mentorship, and direct supervision of the Regiment of Cadets while effectively educating them in professional and effective leadership principles in support of SUNY Maritime College's mission
  • Participates in the Indoctrination Program and works with Cadet IDO leadership to develop MUG leadership development training programs during the academic semesters
  • Assume duties and responsibilities related to Title IX issues
  • Serve as the Senior Regimental Affairs Officer during a portion of Sea Term training period in alignment with the Office of the Commandant and Master of the Training Ship
  • Participate in the in-port and at sea regimental duty rotation during Sea Term training, including pre/post-Sea Term
  • Ensure consistency of the leadership development training programs to align with Sea Term training program(s)
  • Assigned to the Regiment to develop, implement and sustain a Leadership Development Education/Experience Continuum to span the four years of enrollment in the Regiment
  • Responsible for coordinating with the Training Officer to respond to the increased requirements imposed by implementing a Leadership Development Continuum
  • Plan and assist in the execution of the Regimental Preparatory JSTART program
  • When necessary, work with the Dean of Admissions to recruit potential students. Attend Open Houses and other events to make presentations about the Regiment of Cadets
  • Chaperone cadet groups during special events on and off campus, ensuring safety, discipline, and professionalism throughout all engagements
  • Maintain confidential discipline and performance files
  • Additionally, duties could include teaching in the Leadership Development Continuum each semester (but no more than 6 credits)

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution
  • Coast Guard license with at least 5 years of sailing experience and/or military experience
  • Strong desire to work in a student-oriented environment in higher education
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks; demonstrated organizational skills
  • Models appropriate character and strong ethics through disciplined behavior and professional appearance
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license, 12 Pax van lenses certification, Transportation Worker's Identification Card (TWIC), and passport for international travel
  • Support and facilitate a respect and understanding for the importance of diversity and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree
  • Documented Title IX experience/qualifications
  • Previous experience in education, state, or large city system

 

 

 

Additional Information:

Classification : The Deputy Commandant of Cadets/Leadership Development and Operations Officer is a UUP position. The anticipated salary will be $85,000 to $95,000 with an outstanding benefits package (for more information, please see the  UUP-FT-Benefits-at-a-Glance-Jan-2025). Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Review of applications will commence immediately and conclude when the position is filled. 

Special Notes: This is a 12-month academic year appointment UUP position. Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search occur simultaneously. 

The potential employee must furnish (at his or her own expense) and maintain a full complement of appropriate uniforms in excellent condition. The typical daily work routine and official college functions require proper uniforms and organizational clothing. Individuals may be designated as escorts for dignitaries and must be able to present an outstanding professional appearance, demeanor, and knowledge of protocol at all times.
This position often requires working a non-traditional schedule to accommodate the operational needs of the College and requires some travel.
Due to the requirements of the rigorous lifestyle at sea and ashore associated with a shipboard environment, the individual must meet the campus' physical and medical requirements and must be adaptable to a life at sea, which can be related to specific hazards.
Cadets participating in the license program are members of the Regiment of Cadets. This regimental organization transfers to the ship for the Summer Sea Term (SST) and follows a basic merchant ship arrangement modified for training purposes. It is divided into the deck and engine departments. Each department is divided into 3 divisions for watch, maintenance and training purposes. Administrative assistants and technical specialty Cadet Officers provide training opportunities and are necessary for supporting the operation of the training ship. The Summer Sea Term is approximately a 80-day training program aboard the College's training ship, and it is a requirement for the incumbent to annually participate in at least half of the prospective training cruise, unless expressly waived by the Master of the Training Ship due to some unusual circumstance.
